Day 7

Day 7 was Friday. Nothing to big, fed the cows and did some fence work in 90 degree weather. ughhhhhhhh. Fence work has to be one of the least exiting jobs ever. It's plenty rewarding, but no one wants to do it.
Oh yes, Junior is getting her eye sight back.
Back to work tomorrow!

Sixth Day

Hey it's been a while:
I drove the skid steer down a ways to a neighboring field where he keeps some old panels. I picked 'em up (loaded with the Boss's help) then drove it down the street to block off an opening for the cows to graze in another area.

Then we went to the store to get some minerals for the cows then I waited for dad while watching Alvin and da Chipmunks

P.S. Junior is going blind

K, we're tied for first on funnest/ memorable days.

1. We went to a neighboring field to get some calves 'cause they were getting to big. I.e we weaned them from their moms, and we left them in the reciving pen to quit fussing for their moms.

2. We went to the same field to get some scrap metal. I got to drive the loader down the street. :-D

Here's the best:

3: I got to drive! The Boss was doing the picking up the scrap metal in I moved the truck to the outher places!! I was scared out of my mind but I was so exited!!!!!!!

Fourth Day

Sorry haven't written in a little bit. Monday was my most recent working day. It was pretty routine.
Fed the cows. Then we cleared the electric fence of debris from a previous storm. It was very unexciting. We rounded up some calves in a feed lot to weigh them. Weasel didn't have a tag. He is now number 19 and weighs 123 pounds.
I am gonna start again Friday.

On The Second Day...

Well, the second day on the job and it was pretty routine except for two things.

1: Feeding the cows I was scooping out corn gluten I didn't lift the pail high enough and my thumb was crunched between the bucket and the plywood container that holds the gluten. Now when I hit the space bar I get a nice twinge .

2: This is pretty gross, but it is life on the farm. When we were lifting an empty water barrel we found that some mice had nested there, it was just the little babies (poor, disgusting things, they didn't have their eyes open) and The Boss took one look at 'em and promptly started stomping on them.

After this gruesome ritual was done, The Boss scraped up some dirt with his shoe and buried them "So they won't smell," looked down and saw a wide-eyed, pale, and repulsed 13-year old face. He laughed and explained his woes with past mice, who had chewed through his cow scale cord and had to replace the whole $600 dollar thing. I was strangely quiet the next hour. Ahhhhh...... Life on the farm.

Next day is probably Thursday. So I'll write again soon!

The First Day

Preface: I got a summer job on a beef farm in Harvest, Al. So i'm gonna keep you updated on what I do.

It's the first day on the job and I loved it. The Boss was very clear on what he wanted done. We have all the feed organized in a specific order. I had to load it up a certain way. The calf's in one pen like to stand in the feed box. So we had to clean out the mud and other business. So we repeated the process for four other pens. The last one we did we had to go ride on the back roads up a ways to the neighboring field. And guess who got to ride in the bed of the truck? After we had the feed all cleared away way went to Tennessee to get some more corn gluten (we feed the cows a specific diet: corn gluten , plain mashed up dry corn, and soy wholes) in 5 ton bags. And that will only last him roughly 2 weeks! The loading place was like one of the granaries you see in Idaho. But wayyyyyyyy smaller. we held the bags up(not lifting up just upright) and the corn gluten poured out of the hose above us. It was really dusty. When we came home we had to fill the water tanks and chase a calf (who I nicknamed Weasel because of his red fur and how he evaded our plans to move him) from one pen to another. Then The Boss told me that the next time we he does fence repairs he's gonna let me drive the "Beat-Up Truck". Then dad came and got me. I went home, showered and I'll go again Tuesday. Can't wait
